Prospect Heights family wins backyard makeover contest

It's been a tough year for Sharon Zeeck's family since an electrical fire all but destroyed their Prospect Heights home, but things are finally looking up. The family recently moved back to the rebuilt house, Harry Zeeck has a new job and a fabulous backyard will replace the weeds and construction debris there now. Sharon Zeeck also is the winner of the Daily Herald's "Get Your Summer On" contest, winning a full backyard makeover complete with installation.

Kim Presbrey was a nature enthusiast, a hunter, a fisherman, an attorney, a lobbyist, a labor advocate, a sports fan, a master shopper, a pilot, and above all, a family man. Friends and family members of the prominent Aurora attorney gathered Sunday to remember Presbrey, who died May 26, nearly two months after the experimental plane he was flying crashed into a Florida grocery store. Presbrey was 60.

A 66-year-old St. Charles man is accused of raping a friend of relative. Gary Kluber is charged with criminal sexual assault and faces up to 15 years in prison. He also was convicted of sex charges in 1988, records show, but got periodic imprisonment and intensive probation.

Family has questions about Elgin soldier's 2011 death

The wife of an Elgin soldier says she now doesn't believe he died as a result of what her husband told her was a training accident in Texas. Kris Hansley said she still has a lot of questions about the June 2011 death of her husband, Army Pfc. Timothy John "T.J." Hansley, 21, in a psychiatric hospital in El Paso, Texas. "He said he was injured in training, but his commander told us the training accident never happened," she said.

A 50-year-old Elgin woman was arrested on cannabis trafficking charges after police intercepted a 45-pound delivery of marijuana. Bail was set at $1 million for Diana A. Leal and she faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. She is due in court on June 21.

Elgin Area School District U-46 has named seven people to administrative positions for the 2012-2013 school year, from principals to an assistant superintendent. Barbara Johnson will replace Carmen Rodriguez as the assistant superintendent for elementary education. Rodriguez is retiring after serving many years in U-46 and three years of this position.

The city of Elgin has been added to a federal wiretapping lawsuit filed by a former Elgin Police lieutenant and his business partner last year. Greg Welter and Debra Seitz argue their emails were hacked into by Welter's estranged wife, who is an Elgin police sergeant, and former Elgin Deputy Chief Bob Beeter, and then passed along to the city for an investigation.

The Gilberts village board recently approved a resolution acknowledging its desire to reduce the number of supervisors on its police force through attrition. The department today has four full-time supervisors for four full-time officers, a situation blamed on a state statute requiring departments to keep former chiefs on staff if they are discharged from the top post before they are eligible to collect a pension.

Plans moving forward for Pingree Grove fire station

The Pingree Grove and Countryside Fire Protection District is moving forward with plans to build a new fire station for its 50-square-mile coverage area. It would be located on 3.1 acres west of Reinking Road just north of Route 72 in the Cambridge Lakes North subdivision.
